We process data to secure our site and optimise our website experience

We don’t collect personal data via our website like your name and email address unless you use our event submission form, comment, or contact us. Then we might ask you to include your name, contact and sometimes other info like business details, so when you comment, contact us or use us to promote your news for instance by uploading info about your events, we know who you are and can contact you if we need to. The info will be there on the relevant form to consent to or not.

When you leave a comment

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Technical tools secure the website, record stats and help us optimise our content

We use technical tools like security tools, cookies and similar tools to secure our website and protect our visitors, to process technical data that we can use to be the best business we can be, for statistical purposes, and to ensure our content quality is the best it can be for our readers, site users and those businesses whose adverts we publish.

Examples

Example 1: By processing information about the location of our site users we can use the information to make decisions. If many users in Birmingham respond to a feature about Iron Maiden, and nobody responds to a feature about Roy Orbison, we can decide to write more about Iron Maiden or a similar.

Example 2: We’re experts in creating great content and publishing online and in print, by using third-party security tools from experts in their field: which is creating today’s most superior website protection software and tools, we can ensure that we supply the safest, most secure, protected environment for our site users when they visit us to use our guides. For instance using these tools we can automatically prevent and permanently block any IP address from which brute-force attack attempts are logged.

Example 3: We use third party embeds to improve your experience at the website, these include: (with links to their own privacy terms for your reference)

Google’s YouTube
Soundcloud
Spotify
Twitter
Facebook

We do not process sensitive personal data, such as data concerning health, religious choices etc.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should note that if you are uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, visitors to the website can download and extract data, including any location data from images on the website.
