The Girl from Guildford St: growing up in the Birmingham Back to Backs 1957 – 1968
Gina Maddison is a former retired librarian for Birmingham and Sandwell councils. As a librarian, she had a particular interest in local and family studies.
Gina grew up in the Back to Backs of Lozells, in the 1960s, one of the last generation of children to do so. These houses were two up, one down, with a coal cellar, a shared yard, no hot running water or central heating, an outside toilet, a tin bath and a brewhouse in the back yard, for washing.
She has written a book about her childhood under the pen name Grace Caroline Holte, published by Brewin Books, and the proceeds go to charity. It can be purchased from amazon , Brewin books, or autographed copies available from jkmanvilbooks [at] gmail.com. Copies can also be requested from Birmingham Libraries.
The book celebrates a way of life now gone, where virtually all Brummies, including the author’s parents, worked in local factories and trade and manufacturing was booming in Birmingham.
The book has been warmly received by Carl Chinn and Alton Douglas as an evocation of a way of life long gone.
