SUMMARY:How to Translate Research into a Comic: Examples from Disaster Scho
 larship
DESCRIPTION:IAS Residential Fellow Dr Gemma Sou leads a workshop discussing
translating research into comics.Have you ever thought about translating
your research into a comic? Or ever thought about using comics as a creati
ve method to gather data? Comics present an opportunity to make research m
ore participatory\, to gather new and unexpected data\, to create more eth
ical representations of participants and their contexts\, and to release y
our creativity.Join us for a hybrid workshop with IAS Residential Fellow D
r Gemma Sou\, the author of “How to Translate Research into a Comic: Exa
mples from Disaster Scholarship” paper\, recently published in the Journ
al of Disaster Studies (JDS).Gemma will be joined by Dr Oliver Hooper\, Dr
Karen Sung &amp\; Richard Johnson\, whose research and practice also inco
rporates comics\, to discuss the language and conventions of comics\, how
to decide which findings to communicate\, writing the script\, choosing an
d working with an illustrator\, participatory scripting\, and developing c
haracters. You will also have an opportunity to create your own comic (or a
t least part of one!). Ultimately\, in this workshop we will explore how t
o think visually and how to communicate research visually\, rather than ho
w to draw. The workshop is co-hosted by the Journal of Disaster Studies and
Loughborough University’s Institute of Advanced Studies.Arrivals from 2
:15 pm for a 2:30 pm start.International House can be found here on the ca
mpus map.If these in person tickets have sold out\, you can still register
  for the Zoom Webinar.
