SUMMARY:Reg Meuross: Stolen From God - Kitchen Garden Cafe\, Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:REG MEUROSS TAKES STOLEN FROM GOD ON OCTOBER TOUR FOR BLACK HIS
TORY MONTH\n\nAcclaimed songwriter's deeply researched live song cycle exp
loring England's role in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people visits
five venues across England\, bringing together folk song\, live narration
\, concertina and West African kora.\n\nAcclaimed singer-songwriter Reg Me
uross takes Stolen From God back on the road this October\, touring the po
werful live song cycle for the fourth consecutive Black History Month.\n\n
Stolen From God grew from more than four years of research into England's
involvement in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people and the ways tha
t history remains embedded in churches\, country estates\, ports\, family
 trees\, parish records and inherited wealth.\n\nThrough original songs\, l
ive narration and the distinctive meeting of English folk instrumentation
with West African kora\, the performance brings those histories into the c
oncert hall through the stories of sailors and merchants\, vicars and poli
ticians\, enslaved people\, abolitionists and resistance.\n\nThe songs ran
ge across figures including John Hawkins\, Edward Colston and Olaudah Equi
ano\, while asking broader questions about Empire\, wealth\, faith\, explo
itation and the stories Britain chooses to remember.\n\n"Years of writing
and research have revealed to me some remarkable stories of defiance and b
ravery\, courage and endurance\," says Meuross. "As my research for Stolen
From God progressed\, I realised how little I knew about Black History in
Britain\; how little I'd been taught growing up\; how little I knew of Em
pire and how it was made.\n\n"I hope with my songs and this project to mak
e a useful contribution by bringing some light to a complex issue\, and an
other way of hearing these stories."\n\nThe work has already attracted str
iking reviews. The Guardian called the album "ambitious\, often unsettling
"\, Americana UK described it as "one of the best folk albums I've heard i
n a long time"\, and BBC Radio Scotland's Iain Anderson said Meuross had "
never made a more important or more deeply considered and researched album
 ".\n\nAcross five performances in Bridgwater\, Aldershot\, Birmingham\, Hu
ll and Todmorden\, Meuross is joined by concertina virtuoso Cohen Braithwa
ite-Kilcoyne and kora player and griot Modou Ndiaye Cissokho. Selected dat
es also feature guest narrators\, including acclaimed author and broadcast
er Jeffrey Boakye in Hull.\n\nStolen From God was first released as an alb
um in 2023 after Meuross began researching the project in 2018. The live p
roduction has since developed into a concert experience built around the s
ongs\, musicianship and narration\, with the combination of concertina and
kora giving the work a musical language that reaches between English folk
traditions and West African musical heritage.\n\nOCTOBER 2026 TOUR DATES\
