Living in rural Virginia, Devon Sproule’s musical journey is as diverse as her roots. Raised in eco-villages near Kingston, Ontario, and Louisa, Virginia, this 33-year-old artist is a musician, a high school drop-out, a birder, a dedicated student of Deaf Culture and sign language & much more! Married to her husband and producer, Paul Curreri, for a decade, she’s set to appear at Kitchen Garden Cafe this September!

Sproule’s music is a unique tapestry of sounds that defy easy classification. Critics have praised her work, describing lyrics that “glance off each other arrestingly, juxtaposing images.” (Financial Times) for potential new fans. Her music’s quirky affectations may remind you of artists like Bjork, with occasional forays into the darker, more introspective style of Michelle Shocked (Village Voice).

At its core, Sproule’s music celebrates the complexities of the human experience, often drawing inspiration from the natural world. It’s been dubbed “North American music with weirdo roots,” a fitting label for her genre-blending style. Her recordings have been gracing our ears since 2007, thanks to the UK’s Tin Angel Records, and she frequently collaborates with the Toronto-based band Bernice and producer Sandro Perri.

In the summer of 2015, Sproule ventured to Yukon and Nova Scotia to record songs from her new collection, “The Gold String.” This album, as she puts it, explores the idea of a “golden string” that connects all things, particularly those touched by love. It’s a concept that has become more than imagination for her; it’s about making it happen.

But Sproule’s music doesn’t stop at North American borders. She’s a globe-trotting artist who has shared her music in Canada, the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia. Her unique sound transcends boundaries, resonating with audiences worldwide.

If you’re catching one of her shows, you’re in for a treat. Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings will be joining her. Cummings is a solo performer with a penchant for the Wurlitzer electric piano and early pre-programmed drum machines. Having worked with Tin Angel Records since 2010, his appearance promises to add an extra layer of musical magic to the evening.
